The current rise in the interest of oxide nanoparticles with wide range of proposed applications and forecasted growth in production has caused concerns about the potential impact of these nanoparticles on the environment and human health. Nanoferrites and nanooxides have been proposed for an increasing number of biomedical and food packaging applications. Although the in vitro toxicity depending on varied sizes and coating of some particles has been evidenced, the mechanism of toxicity, physicochemical and cyto-genotoxical studies are incompletely understood, in vivo.

...the knowledge on human exposure and possible toxicity of nanotechnology products is limited. To understand the mechanism of toxicity, thorough knowledge of the toxicokinetic properties of nanoparticles is warranted. There is a need for information on the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) of nanoparticles and validated detection methods of these man-made nanoparticles. Determination of the ADME properties of nanoparticles requires specialised detection methods in different biological matrices (e.g. blood and organs). In this paper, the current knowledge on the kinetic properties of nanoparticles is reviewed. Moreover, knowledge gaps from a kinetic point of view (detection, dose, ADME processes) are identified. As the discussion on potentially undesired side effects of engineered nanoparticles heats up there is an increasing amount of nanotoxicology research that gets undertaken and published. However, very few studies have been conducted to assess the toxicity of nanomaterials to ecological terrestrial species,

Once we step back, examine the facts, and look objectively at the big picture, it is obvious that microchips, like vaccines, are not the silver-bullet solution to our man-made problems.
