When summer arrives… the temperature of your laptop gets quite warm, so you go mental and you start to panic. Well, you are not the only one!

One of the qualities of laptops is that they tend to overheat more often than computers; this is called computer overheating because their refrigeration systems tend to be less effective. But this is not a nice excuse: excessive heat is harmful because it can damage the components of the system and cause malfunctions, so it’s doesn’t matter the time of the year, remember that you should avoid computer overheating.

What are the symptoms of computer overheating?

Although the most common and clearest symptom is the temperature itself, which will be transmitted through the casing, there are other signs that may indicate that your computer is having a bad time because of the heat. For example:

  • Your system “freezes”, which means that it stops and you get a fixed image on the screen and you cannot do anything else.
  • The execution of tasks slows down, so it gets quite difficult to use the Internet or any other program.
  • The system restarts itself. This is usually due to a security mechanism that many computers have which forces them to restart when the temperature is excessive, as a mechanism to protect the components. If this happens to you, then good luck my friend!

In addition to this, remember that there are also programs that can inform you about the temperature of the different components of your system, so if you want more accurate information you can always use these programs.

Okay, now I know what computer overheating is, but what can I do?

If your laptop overheats there are some ideas or good habits that you can do in order to avoid this or to help you prevent it. Essentially, they will work depending on the cause of overheating. Let’s find out some of them.

1. Don’t place your laptop on your knees or on an armchair

When placing your laptop on these places or on other kind of soft surfaces, you might obstruct the ventilation grids of the system, hindering its ventilation. In addition to this, if you place it on your body, it will be exposed to the heat generated by the computer itself, which is definitely not a good idea.

2. Keep your computer clean

Dirt and dust are natural enemies of computers. And these can cause problems in the refrigeration of your system, because of this, the fans might not work well and the air might not flow inside.

Disassembling some laptops can become a difficult task, so sometimes you might need to leave it in the hands of professionals, such as those who work in computer maintenance. In addition to this, they can carry out other great tasks for the improvement of refrigeration, such as changing the thermal paste of the system.

3. Don’t use it when it’s sunny

Ok, this might be quite obvious, but I’m sure you’ll find someone who does this. The heat is transmitted wherever you are, and if you put your laptop under the sun in the middle of summer it is very likely that your computer will end up looking like a grill plate.

If you have no choice but to use it despite the high temperatures, then you need to look for a place as cold as possible and by the shade. Components such as the processor or the hard disk will thank you for this.

4. Be careful if you are outdoors

If you find yourself in places like the beach, or by the construction of a new building, etc.… sand or dust particles might get into your computer, this way increasing dirt and hindering cooling. When possible, avoid using it in these places, or protect it as much as you can.

5. Use coolers

These are devices that are usually placed under the casing (although this depends on each model) and release cold that is transmitted to your computer. You have to keep in mind that both the design of your computer and the cooler will influence the results you get, so do your research before buying one.

6. Use lifting things

It is another simple solution that sometimes works. It involves installing “legs” on the base of the system which serve as a support and lift the casing, this way allowing the air to flow under it while also improving its ventilation. It is a fairly simple system, and it can be quite effective.

7. Leave your laptop online

Somehow, a computer looks like a human body. If you run a 100-meter sprint, you will get hot and sweaty. When it comes to computers, this happens too.

When it comes to computers, a “sprint”, means the execution of several “heavy” programs at the same time, which can cause an increase in its temperature. Keep in mind that usually, your team will be running programs “in the background”. Take a look and only use the programs that you actually need to use. This will improve the temperature of the system.

And so far we have gone through some of the answers of that dramatic question which is: Computer overheating, what can I do in order to avoid this? Remember that a suitable temperature will extend the useful life of your computer and improve its performance, so take care of your computer!
